White Oakmoss

White oakmoss, also known simply as oakmoss, is a type of lichen that grows predominantly on the branches and trunks of oak trees, though it can also be found on other deciduous trees and conifers. This lichen is primarily harvested in regions of Europe, particularly from the Balkan Peninsula, France, and Portugal.

The scent profile of white oakmoss is complex and multifaceted, making it a treasured ingredient in the perfumery industry. Its aroma is earthy and woodsy, with a deep, mossy character that evokes the dense, humid forest floor. Additionally, oakmoss exhibits subtle undertones of leather and a slight muskiness, contributing a rich, balsamic quality to fragrances.

In perfumery, oakmoss is highly valued as a base note. It acts as a fixative that enhances the longevity of other more volatile fragrances in a perfume composition. The distinctive scent of oakmoss is often used in chypre and fougère types of fragrances, providing depth and a grounding effect that complements floral, citrus, and woody notes wonderfully.

Due to concerns over skin sensitivity and allergies, natural oakmoss extracts have been largely restricted in use by regulatory agencies, leading to the development of synthetic alternatives and modified natural extracts that retain the characteristic odor profile while reducing the allergenic compounds.
