Tree Moss

Tree moss, typically derived from species of lichen such as Evernia furfuracea, grows on the trunks and branches of various trees. It does not harm the tree; instead, it forms a symbiotic relationship, thriving in damp, shady forest environments. Chemically, moss extracts contain compounds like usnic acid and delta-usnic acid, which contribute to its unique olfactory properties.

The scent profile of tree moss is deeply earthy, with rich, woodsy, and forest-like undertones. It often exhibits a delicate, slightly damp and musky fragrance with hints of loam and bark. Tree moss is prized for its natural, grounding aroma which can also have subtle balsamic or resinous notes, adding complexity and depth. In perfumery, tree moss is extensively used as a base note, providing a long-lasting, sophisticated backdrop that blends well with floral, fruity, and woody notes to convey a sense of the great outdoors and freshness reminiscent of a forest after rain.
