Sweetgrass

Sweetgrass, scientifically known as Hierochloe odorata, is a perennial grass native to North America and Eurasia, cherished for its fresh, sweet fragrance. It grows in rich, moist soils often found in meadows, marshes, and along streambanks. Sweetgrass is easily recognized by its long, slender leaves that can reach up to 24 inches in height and its unique, sweet vanilla-like aroma, which is especially potent when dried. The scent of sweetgrass is often described as warm, earthy, and slightly herbal with a strong, clean, sweet note reminiscent of fresh hay and coumarin. This distinctive fragrance becomes more pronounced when the grass is braided and then dried. Sweetgrass is frequently used in indigenous North American rituals for its purifying and protective properties, and it is also popular in modern aromatherapy and perfumery for its comforting and uplifting scent.
