Oak Moss

Oak moss (Evernia prunastri) is a species of lichen that grows primarily on the trunk and branches of oak trees, although it can also be found on other deciduous trees and conifers. This lichen is prevalent in the mountainous regions of Northern Hemisphere countries, particularly in Central and Southern Europe.

Oak moss is highly valued in the perfume industry because of its distinctive scent profile, which forms the base note in many fragrances. Its aroma is described as earthy, rich, and woodsy with a slightly leathery and mossy character. The scent is deep and complex, often displaying hints of bark and foliage, which can bring an enveloping, alluring quality to perfumes. It imparts a natural, forest-like background note that enhances the other elements in a fragrance.

Besides its appealing scent, oak moss also acts as a fixative in perfumery, helping to stabilize the volatility of other, more fleeting scents and improving the longevity of the overall fragrance on the skin.

Oak moss absolutes and extracts are commonly used in an array of products, including fine fragrances, scented candles, incense, and skincare preparations. However, because natural oak moss contains allergenic compounds, such as atranol and chloroatranol, modern usage often relies on chemically modified or synthetic versions that minimize these allergens while retaining the classic oak moss scent.
