Costus Root

Costus root, derived from the plant species *Saussurea costus*, is a significant element in traditional medicine and perfumery. This perennial plant is native to high altitudes in the Himalayas. The root itself is harvested for its olfactory and medicinal properties.

The scent profile of costus root is notably unique and complex. It features a deep, earthy aroma characterized by woody, animalic, and slightly musty undertones. Some find hints of wet soil and raw mushrooms in its scent. The aroma can also be described as rich and intense, often compared to old forests or damp earth, which lends a grounding, almost primal characteristic to the compositions it's part of.

In perfumery, costus root is utilized for its fixative properties—helping to stabilize more volatile fragrance notes and enhance the longevity of the scent on the skin. It’s often used sparingly because of its potent nature, incorporated into oriental, woody, or chypre fragrances to add depth and warmth. Its enveloping and distinctive smell, while not universally appealing, plays a crucial role in creating sophisticated and enduring scent blends.
