Buchu Or Agathosma

Buchu, also known as Agathosma, is a genus of aromatic plants native to South Africa, with the most commonly known species being Agathosma betulina and Agathosma crenulata. These plants are part of the Rutaceae family and are highly valued for their distinctive fragrance and medicinal properties.

Buchu leaves are small, glossy, and oval-shaped with oil glands throughout the surface, which release their potent aroma when crushed. The scent profile of buchu is richly minty and peppery with strong fruity notes that resemble blackcurrant. Some describe it as having nuances of rosemary or eucalyptus. This unique combination makes buchu a popular component in the flavoring and fragrance industries, particularly in the production of perfumes, food flavorings, and health products.

The strong, refreshing scent of buchu is not only pleasant but also has therapeutic qualities. It has been traditionally used in South African herbal medicine to treat various ailments, leveraging its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties.
